Recognizing World Refugee Day

Today, June 20th is recognized as World Refugee Day across the world. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as the world fights the mostly deadliest disease we have seen in our lifetime - the refugees, many of them the most vulnerable are facing unprecedented challenges.

"Every minute 20 people are forced to leave everything behind out of their homes due to war, persecution or terror (UNHCR)"

As of June 2019, at least 70.8 million people have been forced to flee their homes around the world. And the numbers continue to rise. In 2019, there was an increase of at least 8.7 million people forcibly displaced, growing the number around to 79.5 million people. Among them are nearly 26 million refugees, around half of whom are under the age of 18.

Now more than ever we should acknowledge the contributions of refugees, recognize their resilience and express support.

So, how can we all support? Donate to your local government's refugee fund. Volunteer with the local government or NGOs and connect with refugees. Stay informed of the latest developments, Donate goods from clothes to household essentials to school supplies. Every action counts and each one of us can do something to empower, support and make a difference.
